Ragna Stories

• In the lower levels of Kagutsuchi, Ragna is waiting for the commotion after the recent "terrorist incident" to die down. Following him is Lieutenant Noel Vermillion of the NOL, claiming to wish to talk to him for a bit. Ragna tells her off and she does leave, though not before warning him that the next time they meet, it'll be as enemies again.


• After Noel leaves, Ragna calls out to Carl Clover, who had been watching them all this time. He warns the vigilante not to engage him in battle, but Carl refuses to listen and attacks him. Ragna beats Carl easily (although he made sure to hold back), but the boy calling for his older sister brings back the memories of his own little brother, Jin. In the moment when he's distracted, Deus Machina: Nirvana slashes him across his chest with her blades. Due to that serious injury, Ragna loses consciousness and falls several levels down, all the way to the Kaka clan village. While unconscious, he dreams of the times Jubei took him under his wing right after he had acquired his Grimoire (though he has hardly any memory of doing so; he also doesn't remember having met Jubei before, even though it was him who had brought him to Sister's church).


• He's found by Taokaka, who takes him to the Lost Town for treatment. While there, he remembers the first thime he'd met Tao, which was during the time when he traveled with his Master, Jubei. While near Kagutsuchi, they stumbled upon Torakaka and little Taokaka, though she doesn't recall that. After remaining in the village for a few days, Ragna leaves and makes his way to Orient Town, where he's stopped by Platinum the Trinity, who then forces him to buy her food. Ragna quickly finds out there are two different souls in the girl's body─ Luna and Sena─ and that they're in possession of a Nox Nyctores class weapon, as well as that they're Jubei's students before he's left with an enormous bill to pay.


• A few big misunderstandings with the waitress later, Ragna faces an unknown Murakumo Unit that teleported inside the restaurant. It turns out Kokonoe is behind it, and on her order, Λ-No.11- attacks Ragna. He defeats her, and as a thank-you for the data she managed to gather on the Azure Grimoire from the battle, Kokonoe gives Ragna a single piece of advice, which is telling him not to fight Terumi. Before he can ask her what she meant by that, Λ-No.11- is teleported away.


• Once he reaches the gardens in the higher levels of Kagutsuchi, Ragna calls out to Rachel, knowing she's probably watching him. She does appear, scolding him for treating her like a stalker. The vampire then proceeds to confirm that his Azure Grimoire is indeed a fake and explains that he's the Destroyer of the World, which is why the Power of Order─ in this case, Jin Kisaragi─ seeks to destroy him, much like antibodies do during an infection within human body. She also tells him he cannot defeat Terumi, no matter what, but refuses to share the details. Annoyed by how everyone keeps him in the dark about things that matter, Ragna attacks her...

• ... and loses the fight. Rachel warns him he uses his Azure Grimoire too much, but he refuses to listen, claiming its power is his to use however he wishes to. Resigned, Rachel leaves him to his own devices. Once she's gone, Ragna loses control over his Grimoire and it goes haywire, releasing a massive amount of seithr all at once. As he struggles to regain control, he watches himself being utterly consumed by the Grimoire─ only for it to stop suddenly like nothing happened at all. Exhausted from the effort, Ragna decides to ignore that incident and move forward.


• As he reaches the Cathedral within the NOL branch, Ragna meets Jin. He begs his little brother to leave, knowing he won't be able to keep the Grimoire's power from going haywire again any longer, but Jin gleefuly insists they fight instead, leaving him no choice. During their battle Ragna finally loses what little control over the Azure Grimoire he still had, turning into the Black Beast. Once again, it goes on a wild rampage, wrecking havoc and killing all humans in its path. Unaware of what's going on, Ragna partially regains consciousness, though he cannot see or do anything, save for listening to the screams of people who are killed by the Beast. Eventually the monster is defeated by Hakumen, though not before it destroyed most of the world. Rachel and Jubei see the Beast off as it dies, Jubei feeling guilty for once again beign unable to save Ragna, but Rachel reassures him no one is to blame for this. Still not understanding what happened, Ragna tells Rachel it's alright, though his words don't reach her. She apologizes for not being able to do anything other than watch, and promises to see him in the next world.

• ... and wins, proving his resolve to Rachel, who praises and urges him to go find Noel Vermillion on top of the NOL's Kagutsuchi branch.


• As he reaches the Cathedral, Ragna meets Jin, who refuses to let him pass, going on and on about how the Dark One must die.

• After being ordered to investigate traces of some odd energy coming from the old Cauldron in the ruins of the 5th Hierarchical City of Ibukido, Lieutenant Makoto Nanaya of the Novus Orbis Librarium Intelligence Department arrives at the facility and begins searching the place. While doing so, she thinks about the relationship between the House of Mutsuki of the Duodecim families who governs the Allied Cities of Ikaruga and the NOL.


• She discovers another door leading to an area thick with seithr, where she finds another Cauldron. Upon checking the system data in the control room, she finds a terminal that is still linked to the Cauldron. According to its data, the experiments involving the 12th Prime Field Device, which Makoto recognizes from the photo as her friend Noel, were being carried out on the day when Ibukido was destroyed; it also appears the one involved in its creation was Colonel Relius Clover of the R&D. Seeing all that, she feels pain in her head and loses consciousness.


• She wakes up on board of the NOL's Ars Magus vessel heading towards 13th Hierarchical City of Kagutsuchi. Her main goal for going there, as she recalls, is to pass a data disk to a member of Sector Seven, but as she's heard that Tsubaki Yayoi, a member of Zero Squadron, "Wings of Justice" has been sent on a top secret mission to Kagutsuchi, she quickly figured out it had to be connected to Jin and Noel. As such, she intends to find them before Tsubaki does and perhaps hush the whole thing to prevent her friends from fighting among themselves.


• Once in Kagutsuchi port, Makoto immediately runs into Jin, who is gravely injured. She offers him help, which he accepts, if begrudgingly. However, the moment she tries to ask him about Noel's whereabouts, they're interrupted by the appearance of none other than Captain Hazama. He attacks them both, though it's not until Makoto asks him about his plans regarding Noel that he actually gets serious. Despite his wounds, Jin manages to freeze him long enough to pick Makoto up and run away with her, leaving Hazama to wonder how the beastkin could know about Noel.


• After carrying her to safety, Jin finally succumbs to his wounds and passes out. As Makoto wonders where she could find a hospital for him, Bang shows up, offering her his assistance. He takes both officers to Ronin-Gai, where Jin stays for treatment. Makoto asks Bang for his reasons for helping the Hero of Ikaruga despite what he's done in the Civil War, only to discover Bang has no knowledge of Jin's success as the war hero and promotion. To her surprise, he tells her Tenjo died in the explosion that completely destroyed Ibukido rather than being killed by Jin, and that said incident ended the war. Confused and lost, Makoto leaves Ronin-Gai to meet Sector Seven agent as planned.


• In the Kagutsuchi Museum, Makoto meets the Red Devil of Secotr Seven and greets him with the agreed password; however, that results with Tager attacking her in response. After they fight, Kokonoe interrupts, questioning Makoto's identity. Not understanding why so many people doubt her, the beastkin explains her mission, including how the Sector Seven is supposedly after Noel Vermillion. When asked for today's date, she replies it's January 3rd, 2200 without hesitation. To her shock, Kokonoe corrects her it's actually December 31st, 2199 and then orders Tager to leave the girl.


• As she goes back to Ronin-Gai, Makoto quickly discovers that Jin has disappeared. Bang informs her that someone has seen him with a masked man, heading towards the higher levels. She figures the man in question must be Relius Clover. As such...

• ... she decides to follow them, worried about Jin's well-being. As a result, she comes face to face with Relius Clover himself. When asked about Jin's whereabouts, he comments that the "Power of Order" as he calls him pursues "the man with the Azure", Ragna the Bloodedge. Terrified that Jin went after the Grim Reaper despite his wounds, Makoto fights Relius in an attempt to gets past him, but gets captured instead. Relius proceeds to "examine" her soul, plucking all the painful memories and emotions she's hidden deep inside and forcing her to relive all of them, commenting how her soul would make a great material for an artificial causality weapon, Detonator. Finally, he reveals that she must have been sent into this timeline by the failed Prime Field Devices of the Ibukido as today is the day when Tsubaki Yayoi is supposed to die. Not having any strength left, Makoto can only call out for Tsubaki as consciousness leaves her.

• ... worried about Jin as she is, she figures he'll be fine and that finding Tsubaki and Noel should be her priority right now. She makes a run for Kagutsuchi's NOL branch, where she finds Tsubaki and wants to give her orders to return to HQ, which she forged herself─ only to find out she doesn't have them on herself. She asks her unsuspecting friend to return to the HQ instead, but Tsubaki politely refuses, saying she cannot leave until she brings Jin back. She confesses she even used her family's status to temprorary transfer to Zero Squadron from the 4th Thurmaturgist Squadron, only further confusing the beastkin. Upon hearing that, Makoto remembers her time in the Academy just before graduation and talking to Tsubaki about their future in the military─ however, Noel was missing from those memories. She immediately asks Tsubaki about their mutual friend, only to find out she has no idea who she's talking about. Before they can find an explanation to that, Hazama appears before them and urges Tsubaki to go after Jin before he finds Ragna. She does as instructed, leaving Makoto to ask Hazama about Noel's whereabouts. He replies she doesn't exist and refuses to explain himself further, complaining about how she nearly destroyed all his plans and aiming to kill her; however, Rachel appears just in time to save Makoto, and they both teleport away.


• Rachel brings Makoto in front of Cauldron and explains that she was pulled into the Boundary and wandered into a world in which Noel Vermillion never existed. Normally, one would lose the sense of self from the experience, but it would seem Makoto's determination has allowed her to survive. With Rachel's help and by focusing on her friendship with Tsubaki and Noel, who both mean a world to her, Makoto manages to return to the ruins of Ibukido in her own timeline. Rachel prompts her to look into the nearby caskets in order to find the answers she's looking for, which she does─ and finds numerous failed Prime Field Devices that came before the girl she knows as Noel Vermillion. When Rachel asks her what she intends to do now, Makoto replies she'll fight to protect her friends before silently bidding farewell to the dolls in caskets and leaving for Kagutsuchi.
